Rick Hyde Returns With 12th EP “In Plain Sight” — A Gritty Blend of Boom Bap, Trap, and Soul

One of the sharpest pens from Benny the Butcher's Black Soprano Family group, Rick Hyde of Buffalo, makes a comeback in Q2 2025 with his 12th EP, In Plain Sight, which is a sequel to Lupara from 2023. Known for his constancy and development across projects, this one adds to his already impressive repertoire by fusing modern gritty elements with tribute to the golden period.

Rick talks about keeping the grass short to notice the snakes in the opening track, which creates the mood with a drumless loop and eerie backing vocals. Rick exhibits remarkable self-awareness as he considers grind mode versus trap life on "God's Timing," which was produced by his own son Myles.

Songs like "Wish You Would" transition into vintage boom bap, where Rick shows off his original position inside the game. Together with Benny the Butcher and Lo Pro, "Minimal Effort" is a no-hook cypher moment, with both emcees showcasing their raw energy.

While "2Gether" takes it all apart and turns into a contemplative prayer on survival and homecomings, "Exodus," with GoToMar$, rides another boom bap sound that emphasizes hustling over idleness. "10,000 Hours" boasts that B$F loyalty is something you can witness with your own eyes while fusing trap and chipmunk soul. The project ends with "What More Can I Say?" Rick calls out mediocrity and demands that listeners "fax rap" in this scathing farewell and condemnation of stale rap.

Similar to Lupara, Rick takes a break from the boards here and works with a variety of established and up-and-coming producers. The EP's soundscape oscillates between trap, boom bap, drumless rap, and tracks with a soulful undertone. Although Rick's bars have improved since last Halloween's R.I.C.K. (Realizing It Can Kill), Benny the Butcher once again steals the show with an outstanding guest verse.

For heads who value bars, progression, and loyalty in the rap game, this is a gritty, real tape.
